Toxins and Health

There are two kinds of toxins the body has to eliminate:

Endotoxins: these toxins are produced in the body as a by-product of metabolism, bacteria and other micro-organisms, such as yeast, also produce endotoxins.  These toxins are the problem in yeast infections and that is why just trying to kill the microbes isn’t enough, we have to help the body flush toxins faster in order to overcome these infections.

Exotoxins:  These are chemicals that are foreign to the body and are introduced into the system through the skin, lungs or digestive tract.  They include drugs, prescription medication, agricultural chemicals like pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, etc, etc. 

I believe that the excessive amount of these toxins that we are exposed to in the 21st Century is the major cause of many chronic and degenerative illnesses, especially autoimmune disorders. This is because the more dangerous toxins are typically fat soluble and not water-soluble, which means they get stored in our bodies fat cells.

We need to put good nutrition into the body to increase cellular vitality and initiate the detoxification process. 

Winter Skin

When it comes to winter health one of the important organs we need to nourish is the skin, it is the biggest organ we have and your skin is an outer reflection of your insides, so your diet is an important factor for most skin problems.

When it comes to dry, flaky skin, omega-3 fat, such as fish oil, plays a very important role. Besides drinking plenty of water, it may be one of the best ways to hydrate your skin from the inside out. A reliable way to check your omega-3 status is by taking a close look at your hands – if they are smooth and soft, you’re probably getting enough omega-3 fat in your diet. Dietary Measures for Winter Health

Besides increasing your omega-3 intake, you need to address the rest of your diet as well. Eating a healthy diet, which focuses on whole, organic foods, is your number one strategy for helping your body stay healthy during the winter, and ensuring a good supply of the necessary nutrients you body needs to stay healthy and to help support the body’s natural detox pathways.

 Some foods are particularly effective:

  • Fresh vegetables: Ideally fresh, organic and locally grown. Fresh vegetable juice is also wonderful for detoxification.
  • Fermented vegetables. Many people don’t realize this, but the health and quality of your skin is strongly linked to the health of your gut. Fermented vegetables are ideal for promoting the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria. Balancing your gut microflora has been shown to help against skin irritations and chronic skin problems like eczema and psoriasis. The bacterial cells living in and on your body outnumber human cells by 10 to 1. If you do not regularly consume fermented foods, then a high quality probiotics is definitely recommended.
